How do I know if I have nonenal?
Nonenal, a natural compound created when skin oils oxidize, has a greasy or musty smell. It usually starts after 40, when the skin’s antioxidants decline with age. The catch: you often cannot smell it on yourself. Your nose adapts to it. Other people’s noses do not.
Why is it expensive?
- Real fermented kakishibu. Cheap bars use persimmon fragrance or a splash of juice. Kakiyu uses the concentrated tannin extract that actually breaks down nonenal.
- Made in Japan. Produced where kakishibu has been fermented and used for over a thousand years. Most competitors only borrow the word “Japanese”.
- Slow, traditional fermentation. Unripe persimmons are pressed and fermented the traditional way before a single bar is poured. That takes months, not minutes.
- Seasonal and rare. Persimmons ripen once a year, in autumn. One harvest makes a limited number of bars, so every batch is small.

What does it smell like?
Quiet and clean, with a faint natural note from the persimmon and green tea. It rinses away and leaves your skin smelling like nothing, so it will never fight your perfume or cologne. If you have been burned by soaps that smell worse than the problem, this is the opposite of that.
How long does one bar last?

Is it for men too?
Yes. Nonenal does not care who you are. Men over 40 produce it just like women do, often more, and it settles into collars and pillows. Plenty of our bars get quietly placed in a husband’s shower. He will not ask questions. It is just soap.
